Living With Cancer

Great strides have been made over the past 60 years. Many disorders that were once considered fatal can potentially be curable. This is exciting, but we still have a lot of work to do. We must continue to fund organizations like LLS so this life-changing research can continue. By donating, you can ensure that those “someday” cures can happen today! Together, we can make a difference.

Personal Journey

Dear Family and Friends,

I am honored to have the opportunity to be nominated and run for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Man of the Year for 2015, an award given to the man who raises the most funds for LLS February 19-May2. It has been a truly amazing experience to be heavily involved in the last two LLS Man of the Year Campaigns. Together we have made a huge difference, but we have so much left to do.

Why am I running? I have been affected by cancer in a number of ways. My mother died of a brain tumor when she was 52 years old. I was a 25-year old man, who was suddenly without his mother. This was a very difficult experience and one that my wife Carryn and I learned to cope with and adapt. After my mom’s death came a unique gift. My wife chose to become a Radiation Oncologist after witnessing my mom’s treatment regimen and she has thrived in her role. With the loss of my mother, my father and I became even closer than we were. Several years ago, my father was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and ultimately lost his battle. These experiences have paved the way for my involvement in organizations such as the Hope Ledge of Iowa City, American Cancer Society and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Through this campaign, I am trying to raise awareness and money for LLS in order to fight blood cancers and make sure the “someday” cure is today! Money raised goes towards funding research to find cures, providing services and support for patients and their families, as well as education and advocacy efforts. One dollar equals one vote and my goal is to raise $200,000 during this 10-week campaign. This year our campaign theme is “OwnEverySecond”. This campaign will honor those who are currently battling cancer as well as those who have fought the battle and won. We will also honor all of those we have lost along the way. Your 100% tax-deductible donation can be made via the secure website at http://www.mwoy.org/pages/ia/eia15/manderson or if you would like to mail a check payable to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Memo: Mike Anderson
